We are approaching the mining industry’s annual mass migration to the warmer February climes of Cape Town for the Mining Indaba 2015 conference, with speculation rife as to who will do deals, who will down tools and how the trend-setting summit will set industry expectations for the months ahead. The Tavistock team en route to S.A. recently held a raucous debate about what we expect from the conference and I won’t pretend we agreed on everything. But drawing on 10 years of Indaba attendance – and overriding the boundlessly bullish tilt some of us have on gold miners (you know who you are) – we reached consensus on three principal industry issues which are:

With scenes ranging from heartrending to the sublime - whale carcasses on the Barents Sea beach, gun-toting drunk hunting expeditions and Russian Orthodox church counselling of villainous officials - Andrei Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan is, in common parlance, a heck of a film. Few would expect the Russian Ministry of Culture to support a film in which portraits of the country’s former leaders are used for target practice, but it did, to be greeted by petitioning from some that it be banned.
